Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Neem (Azadirachta indica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for its antimicrobial properties. More recently, several laboratory studies have demonstrated that neem extracts possess antifungal activity against dermatophytes, the fungi responsible for Athlete’s Foot (tinea pedis). For example, in vitro studies have shown that neem leaf and seed oil can inhibit the growth of Trichophyton species, which are common causes of this infection. However, most of this evidence comes from test tube experiments rather than well-designed clinical trials in humans. There is limited, low-quality clinical evidence suggesting that topical application of neem preparations may help alleviate symptoms or reduce fungal load in cases of Athlete's Foot, but robust randomized controlled trials are lacking. Overall, while the antimicrobial effects of neem are scientifically plausible and supported by preliminary studies, there is not yet strong, direct clinical evidence to support its effectiveness as a sole or primary treatment for Athlete's Foot. Therefore, its use is best considered as complementary or supportive rather than a replacement for conventional antifungal therapies.
