Evidence supporting the use of: Ajuga turkestanica
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ajuga turkestanica is a plant native to Central Asia, traditionally used in folk medicine, but in recent years, it has attracted attention for its potential as an athletic and exercise aid. This interest is primarily due to its content of ecdysteroids, particularly turkesterone, which are plant-derived compounds structurally similar to androgens. Some preclinical studies, mostly in animals and in vitro, suggest that ecdysteroids may have anabolic effects, potentially enhancing muscle mass and physical performance without the androgenic side effects associated with anabolic steroids. For example, research published in Archives of Toxicology (2019) and Biology of Sport (2015) indicates that ecdysteroids like turkesterone can increase protein synthesis and muscle growth in rodents and in cultured muscle cells. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The limited human data available are inconclusive, and most claims of performance enhancement are extrapolated from animal models or anecdotal reports. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting its use as an exercise aid, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain low, justifying a modest evidence rating.
