Its use as an athletic and exercise aid is based on the rationale that supplemental D-ribose could help replenish ATP levels more rapidly following intense exercise, potentially supporting improved energy recovery and reducing fatigue. Several small clinical studies have investigated the effects of D-ribose supplementation in athletes and individuals with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. Some results suggest modest improvements in exercise recovery, muscle energy, and perceived exertion, particularly in scenarios involving repetitive, high-intensity exercise with insufficient recovery time. However, many of these studies have methodological limitations, including small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and short durations. Systematic reviews and larger, well-controlled trials are lacking, and the overall quality of evidence remains low to moderate. D-ribose appears to be generally well-tolerated at typical supplemental doses, but significant performance enhancement in healthy, well-trained athletes is not consistently demonstrated.
