Arachidonic acid (AA) is an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid that has been studied in the context of athletic performance and exercise aids. Some scientific research suggests a potential role for AA in supporting muscle growth and strength adaptations when combined with resistance training. The hypothesis is that AA serves as a precursor to prostaglandins, which are signaling molecules involved in inflammation and muscle protein synthesis. Small-scale studies and a few randomized controlled trials have reported modest improvements in muscle strength and lean body mass in trained individuals supplementing with AA over several weeks.
However, the evidence base is limited. Most studies involve relatively small sample sizes, short intervention periods, and often receive funding from supplement manufacturers. Additionally, while AA may acutely enhance anabolic signaling, it is also involved in inflammatory pathways, raising potential concerns about safety and the long-term effects of supplementation, particularly in individuals with inflammatory conditions or at risk for cardiovascular disease.
There is no longstanding tradition of AA use in athletic contexts; its application is a relatively recent development emerging from supplement research. Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting its use as an exercise aid, the strength and consistency of the evidence are modest, and further large-scale, independent studies are needed to clarify both efficacy and safety.
