Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bovine collagen is increasingly utilized as an ingredient in supplements marketed for athletic performance and exercise recovery. The rationale is based on the fact that collagen is a primary structural protein in connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and cartilage, which are crucial for joint health and injury prevention in athletes. Recent scientific studies have begun to explore the benefits of collagen supplementation, particularly hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides), in supporting connective tissue repair, reducing joint pain, and potentially enhancing exercise recovery.

Some randomized controlled trials suggest that daily collagen peptide supplementation (often 10g per day) may reduce activity-related joint pain in physically active individuals and athletes. For example, a 2017 study in Current Medical Research and Opinion found that athletes with joint pain experienced reduced discomfort after 24 weeks of collagen peptide supplementation compared to placebo. Other studies have explored collagen's role in supporting tendon and ligament strength, though results are still preliminary and sample sizes are often small.

Despite emerging evidence, the overall quality and quantity of research remain limited, and most studies focus on joint health and injury recovery rather than direct improvements in athletic performance metrics such as strength or endurance. The physiological mechanism is plausible, but confirmatory large-scale trials are needed. Thus, while there is some scientific validation, the evidence is moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
