Evidence supporting the use of: Capsinoids
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Capsinoids are a group of compounds found in non-pungent chili peppers, chemically related to capsaicin but lacking the characteristic heat. Their use as an athletic and exercise aid is supported by some scientific evidence, though the overall strength of this evidence is moderate and not yet conclusive.
Several clinical studies have examined the effects of capsinoids on metabolism, energy expenditure, and fat oxidation. Research indicates that capsinoids can modestly increase resting energy expenditure and fat oxidation, which may theoretically enhance exercise performance or support weight management in physically active individuals. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2007) found that daily capsinoid ingestion increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation in healthy adults without increasing heart rate or blood pressure.
However, direct evidence linking capsinoids to improved athletic performance, endurance, or strength is limited. Most studies focus on metabolic effects rather than direct exercise outcomes. The mechanisms are thought to involve activation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) receptor, stimulating thermogenesis and lipolysis.
In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the use of capsinoids as an exercise aid, the magnitude of the effect is small, and more research is needed to confirm benefits for athletic performance specifically. Thus, the evidence is rated as moderate (2 out of 5).
