D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is an amino acid that has been investigated for its potential use as an athletic and exercise aid, primarily due to its purported effects on testosterone production. Scientifically, DAA is known to play a role in the synthesis and release of hormones, including luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone, which could theoretically enhance muscle strength, recovery, and athletic performance.

Initial studies, including small trials on untrained men, suggested that DAA supplementation could temporarily increase testosterone levels. For example, a 2009 study found that 3g/day of DAA increased testosterone by about 40% after 12 days. However, subsequent and larger studies, especially those involving resistance-trained men, have failed to replicate these testosterone-boosting effects or to demonstrate meaningful improvements in muscle mass, strength, or exercise performance. Some research has even shown that prolonged use of DAA may reduce testosterone levels in resistance-trained individuals.

Current consensus based on systematic reviews and meta-analyses is that there is limited and inconsistent evidence to support the use of DAA as an effective supplement for athletic performance or muscle building in healthy, trained individuals. While the scientific rationale exists, the actual efficacy in athletes or those engaged in intense exercise is unproven or possibly negative. As such, evidence supporting DAA as an athletic or exercise aid is rated low (2/5).
