Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Glucose is scientifically validated as an effective aid for athletic and exercise performance, particularly in the context of endurance sports and prolonged, intense physical activity. During exercise, muscles use glucose as a primary energy source, which is either derived from blood glucose or stored as glycogen in muscle and liver tissues. Numerous studies have shown that consuming glucose before or during exercise can help maintain blood glucose levels, delay the onset of fatigue, and improve both performance and recovery in activities lasting longer than about 60 minutes. This is particularly important for endurance athletes, such as marathon runners or cyclists, whose glycogen stores can become depleted during extended periods of exercise. The ingestion of glucose, either in the form of sports drinks, gels, or other carbohydrate sources, helps replenish these energy stores and sustain performance. Recommendations from major sports and nutrition organizations, such as the American College of Sports Medicine, endorse carbohydrate (including glucose) supplementation for athletes during long-duration exercise. While the benefits are less pronounced for short, high-intensity activities, the efficacy of glucose for supporting endurance performance is strongly supported by a large body of scientific evidence.
