Kola nut (Cola acuminata and Cola nitida) has a history of traditional use in West African cultures as a stimulant and social beverage. Its use as an athletic and exercise aid is primarily attributed to its naturally high caffeine content. Caffeine is a well-studied compound known to enhance alertness, reduce perceived exertion, and improve endurance performance in some individuals.
Modern scientific studies have largely focused on caffeine itself rather than kola nut specifically.
