Evidence supporting the use of: Maca
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable native to the Andes, traditionally consumed for its nutritional value and purported energizing effects. Its use to support athletic performance and exercise endurance has gained popularity in recent years, with claims that it can boost stamina, improve energy, and enhance recovery. The scientific evidence for maca as an athletic or exercise aid is limited but exists. A few small clinical studies have investigated its effects on endurance and energy levels. For example, a randomized pilot study in 2009 involving male cyclists found that supplementation with maca extract for 14 days improved cycling time trial performance compared to placebo. Some animal studies also suggest potential benefits for endurance and antifatigue effects, possibly due to maca’s antioxidant content and its influence on glucose metabolism.
However, the overall quality and quantity of human research are low. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes use non-standardized maca preparations. There is currently insufficient evidence to make definitive claims about maca’s efficacy as an athletic performance enhancer, but preliminary findings are promising enough to warrant further investigation. Maca is generally considered safe as a food supplement, but athletes should be aware of the limited scientific validation. Thus, while maca’s reputation as an exercise aid is growing, its use for this purpose is supported by modest scientific evidence rather than strong tradition or robust clinical data.
