Macamides are unique bioactive compounds found in the root of Lepidium meyenii (maca), a plant native to the Andes. The scientific interest in macamides has grown due to their potential role in exercise performance and fatigue reduction. Preclinical studies, particularly in animal models, have shown that macamides may contribute to enhanced endurance and anti-fatigue effects, possibly by modulating the endocannabinoid system and improving energy metabolism. Some small-scale human studies have evaluated maca supplementation for athletic performance, showing modest improvements in measures such as cycling time trials and perceived energy, but these studies do not specifically isolate macamides as the active component, as maca contains multiple bioactive substances.
