Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Magnesium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate (Magnesium BHB) is a salt form of beta-hydroxybutyrate, a type of exogenous ketone. It is marketed as a supplement to support energy, mental clarity, and athletic performance, especially in the context of ketogenic diets or extended exercise. The proposed mechanism is that exogenous BHB can serve as an alternative energy substrate for muscles and the brain when glucose is low, potentially supporting endurance and reducing fatigue. Magnesium, as an electrolyte, also plays a role in muscle function and energy metabolism.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Magnesium BHB specifically as an athletic or exercise aid is limited and preliminary. Some small studies on exogenous ketones (including BHB salts, not always specifically the magnesium salt) suggest modest improvements in endurance performance or reduced perceived exertion, particularly in athletes adapted to ketogenic diets. Other research, however, finds minimal or no benefit, and some reports note side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort.

The overall quality of evidence is low to moderate, with small sample sizes, variable study designs, and inconsistent outcomes. There is currently insufficient robust, reproducible evidence to strongly support the widespread use of Magnesium BHB for athletic or exercise performance in the general population. More high-quality, large-scale studies are needed to determine its efficacy and safety in this context.
