Methylliberine, commonly known as "Dynamine," is a purine alkaloid structurally similar to caffeine and theacrine. It is increasingly found in pre-workout and energy supplements marketed to athletes and fitness enthusiasts. The rationale for its inclusion is based on its purported ability to increase energy, enhance alertness, and possibly improve mood, much like caffeine but with a potentially different side-effect profile. Scientific evidence supporting methylliberine’s use for athletic and exercise performance is still limited and emerging. A small number of studies have investigated its safety and pharmacokinetics, with some suggesting that it can increase feelings of energy and alertness without significantly affecting blood pressure or heart rate. One randomized, double-blind crossover study found that methylliberine, alone or combined with theacrine and caffeine, increased subjective energy and mood but did not robustly enhance objective physical performance measures. There is currently a lack of large, well-controlled human trials directly demonstrating improvements in exercise capacity, endurance, or strength. Most available evidence is preliminary, and more research is needed to determine its efficacy and safety for athletic performance. Therefore, while there is a plausible scientific basis and early data suggesting potential benefits, the overall evidence is modest (rated 2/5) and not yet conclusive.
