Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mushrooms, particularly species like Cordyceps and Reishi, have been investigated for their potential as athletic and exercise aids. The scientific basis revolves around their purported ability to enhance oxygen utilization, reduce fatigue, and improve endurance. Cordyceps sinensis, in particular, has garnered attention after studies in both animals and humans suggested it may increase ATP production and improve exercise performance, especially in older adults or those new to exercise. However, the quality and scale of these studies are limited, and results are often inconsistent. Some randomized controlled trials have reported modest improvements in VO2 max or exercise capacity, while others found no significant effect compared to placebo. The evidence for other mushroom types (such as Reishi or Shiitake) in this context is even more limited and largely based on their general immunomodulatory and adaptogenic properties rather than direct exercise-enhancing effects. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary data supporting the use of certain mushrooms as exercise aids, high-quality, large-scale human trials are lacking. Thus, scientific support exists but is currently weak to moderate (rated 2/5), and the use of unspecified mushroom supplements for this purpose should be approached with caution until more robust evidence is available.
