Phenylpiracetam is a synthetic derivative of the nootropic drug piracetam, developed in Russia in the 1980s. It has gained some attention as an athletic and exercise aid primarily due to its purported stimulatory, cognitive-enhancing, and anti-fatigue effects. There is limited scientific evidence supporting its use in this context. A small number of Russian studies and anecdotal reports suggest that phenylpiracetam may improve physical performance by enhancing tolerance to cold, increasing endurance, and reducing perception of fatigue, possibly through modulation of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and noradrenaline. These effects have led to its ban by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for use in competition, which reflects concern over its potential performance-enhancing properties.
However, the overall quality and quantity of scientific evidence are low, with most studies having small sample sizes, lack of replication, and limited peer-reviewed publication outside of Russia. There are no large-scale, placebo-controlled trials in athletes published in major international journals. As such, while there is some scientific basis for phenylpiracetam’s use as an athletic aid, the evidence is not robust. Its inclusion on the WADA banned list suggests some efficacy, but more research is needed to fully establish its effects and safety profile for athletic and exercise performance.
