Rhaponticum carthamoides (commonly known as Maral root or Leuzea) has a history of use in traditional Russian and Eastern European medicine as a tonic to improve physical and mental performance. The scientific interest in Rhaponticum as an athletic and exercise aid is primarily due to its content of ecdysteroids, particularly 20-hydroxyecdysone. Several animal studies and limited human trials have suggested that ecdysteroids may promote protein synthesis, increase muscle mass, and enhance physical endurance. For example, a few small-scale human studies from Russia and Eastern Europe (dating from the 1970s-1990s) suggested positive effects on muscle strength and recovery, though these studies often lack rigorous controls and are not widely available in English. More recent in vitro and animal research supports the anabolic activity of ecdysteroids without androgenic side effects. However, systematic reviews and modern clinical trials are limited, and results in human populations remain inconclusive. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for Rhaponticum’s use as an exercise aid, the quality and quantity of clinical data do not yet provide strong validation. Its use is better substantiated than many herbal supplements in sports, but further well-designed human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
