Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sodium nitrate is used in some athletic and exercise aid supplements primarily due to its ability to serve as a dietary source of nitrate. Dietary nitrates have been shown in scientific studies to enhance exercise performance by improving cardiovascular efficiency and reducing the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise. The mechanism involves the conversion of nitrate to nitrite and then to nitric oxide (NO) in the body, which acts as a vasodilator, improving blood flow and muscle oxygenation. Most research on nitrate supplementation for athletic purposes has focused on beetroot juice or potassium nitrate, but sodium nitrate has been studied as an alternative source.

Several randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that sodium nitrate supplementation can increase plasma nitrate and nitrite levels, enhance exercise tolerance, and improve time-to-exhaustion during high-intensity exercise in both trained and untrained individuals. However, the magnitude of performance improvements tends to be modest, and individual responses can vary. Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding the safety of chronic sodium nitrate intake due to potential risks associated with nitrosamine formation and increased sodium consumption. As a result, while there is scientific support for the use of sodium nitrate to enhance exercise performance, its application is not as widespread as other nitrate sources, and long-term safety data are limited. The overall evidence base is moderate, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5.
