Evidence supporting the use of: Taurine citric acid
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid commonly found in energy drinks and dietary supplements aimed at athletes. Scientific studies indicate that taurine plays several roles in muscle function, cellular hydration, and the modulation of oxidative stress, all of which may be relevant to athletic performance and recovery. Research has shown that taurine supplementation can reduce exercise-induced muscle damage, attenuate oxidative stress, and improve endurance performance in both animal models and human trials. For example, a 2018 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine reviewed several randomized controlled trials and concluded that taurine supplementation had a small but significant positive effect on endurance performance.
Citric acid, on the other hand, is less studied in the context of athletic performance but is included in sports drinks as a flavoring agent and because it may help buffer lactic acid, thereby potentially reducing fatigue during intense exercise. Some small studies have suggested that citric acid, as part of a mixture with other buffering agents, may modestly delay the onset of muscle fatigue by supporting acid-base balance during intense exercise. However, the evidence for citric acid alone is limited.
Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence (rating 3/5) to support the use of taurine as an exercise aid, particularly for endurance and recovery, while citric acid’s role is less direct but may contribute to exercise performance when combined with other ingredients.
