Evidence supporting the use of: Valine alpha-hydroxyisocaproate
For the health condition: Athletic and Exercise Aids
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Valine alpha-hydroxyisocaproate (also known as HICA or leucic acid) is a metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine. It has been marketed as a supplement for athletes, often with claims that it may support muscle growth, reduce muscle breakdown, and improve recovery after exercise. The rationale behind its use comes from both its biochemical relationship to leucine—which is well known for its role in muscle protein synthesis—and some preliminary scientific studies.
The scientific evidence supporting HICA's effectiveness as an athletic and exercise aid is limited but does exist. A few small, randomized controlled trials have explored its effects. For example, a 2010 study by Mero et al. found that male soccer players supplementing with HICA for four weeks experienced less muscle soreness and slightly greater increases in muscle mass compared to placebo. However, the sample sizes were small, and the findings have not been widely replicated. Some other studies have shown modest reductions in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) or markers of muscle damage.
No significant safety concerns have been noted in short-term studies, but longer-term data are lacking. Overall, while there is a scientific basis for the use of Valine alpha-hydroxyisocaproate as an exercise aid, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are low, and more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and optimal dosing. Therefore, its use is considered "scientific" but the strength of evidence is modest.
