Bacopa monnieri, also known as Brahmi, is a traditional Ayurvedic herb that has been investigated for its potential cognitive-enhancing effects. Its use for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is supported by both traditional use and emerging scientific research, though the scientific evidence remains preliminary and limited in scope and quality. Several small, randomized controlled trials and open-label studies have examined Bacopa’s effects on attention, cognitive function, and symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity in children and adults. Some studies have reported modest improvements in attention, cognitive processing, and symptom reduction in children with ADHD when compared to placebo. For example, a 2014 open-label study published in Advances in Mind-Body Medicine found that Bacopa extract improved attention, cognitive processing, and impulse control in children with ADHD over a 12-week period. However, these studies often have methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and short durations. The exact mechanisms by which Bacopa may exert these effects are not fully understood, but it is thought to modulate neurotransmitter levels (such as dopamine and serotonin) and possess antioxidant properties. Overall, while there is some scientific evidence to support Bacopa’s use for attention-related symptoms, it is not robust, and more high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are needed before it can be recommended as a standard treatment for ADD or ADHD.
