Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacopa monnieri, which contains bacopa glycosides (notably bacosides A and B), is an herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to support cognitive function, including memory and attention. Its historical use for mental clarity, learning, and neurological conditions forms the main basis for its association with conditions like Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD). Scientific evidence specifically evaluating Bacopa glycosides for ADD/ADHD is limited and of low quality, with existing clinical trials generally focusing on cognitive enhancement or general attention in healthy adults or elderly populations rather than diagnosed ADD/ADHD populations. A few small studies have examined Bacopa in children with attention issues, with mixed results and methodological weaknesses. The evidence for efficacy in treating ADD/ADHD is therefore weak and largely extrapolated from traditional cognitive uses rather than from robust clinical validation. Most reviews and clinical guidelines do not recognize Bacopa or its glycosides as an established treatment for ADD/ADHD, and more rigorous, targeted research would be required for stronger recommendations.
