Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Panax ginseng has been investigated as a potential adjunct therapy for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), particularly in children. Although ginseng has a long history in traditional medicine for enhancing vitality and cognitive function, its specific use for ADD/ADHD is a more recent scientific exploration. A handful of small clinical trials have evaluated ginseng’s effects on attention and hyperactivity symptoms. For example, a 2011 pilot study by Lyon et al. found that Korean red ginseng improved inattentiveness and hyperactivity scores in a small sample of children with ADHD. Another study combining Panax ginseng with Ginkgo biloba suggested improvements in ADHD symptoms compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of neurotransmitter systems, antioxidant properties, and effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

However, the available studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, lack of replication, and variability in ginseng preparations. Meta-analyses and larger randomized controlled trials are lacking, and current clinical guidelines do not recommend ginseng as a standard treatment. Side effects and interactions with other medications also need consideration. In summary, while there is emerging scientific interest and preliminary evidence suggesting possible benefit, the scientific support for Panax ginseng in treating ADD/ADHD is weak to moderate at this time (evidence rating: 2/5), and more rigorous research is needed.
