Evidence supporting the use of: Proprietary Blend (Fatty Acid or Fat/Oil supplement)
For the health condition: Attention Deficit Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fatty acid or fat/oil supplements, particularly those containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), often grouped with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The rationale stems from the observation that children with ADHD may have lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for brain structure and function.
Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have evaluated the efficacy of omega-3 supplementation in reducing ADHD symptoms. Results have been mixed: some studies report small but statistically significant improvements in attention and hyperactivity symptoms, particularly in subgroups of children with low baseline omega-3 status. However, other trials have found minimal or no effect compared to placebo. A 2018 meta-analysis in Neuropsychopharmacology concluded that while the effect size is small, omega-3 supplementation may yield modest benefit, especially for inattention symptoms, but is not as effective as standard pharmacological treatment.
There is less evidence for proprietary blends of fatty acids beyond omega-3s, and the efficacy of mixed or unspecified "proprietary blend" supplements is not well established. Overall, while there is some scientific basis for the use of omega-3 supplements in ADD/ADHD, the evidence is rated low to moderate (2/5), with modest clinical impact in select populations and insufficient support for generalized use over established therapies.
