Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium (various species)
For the health condition: Autism
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bifidobacterium (various species) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), primarily due to emerging research about the gut-brain axis and observed differences in the gut microbiota of individuals with autism. Several small studies and preclinical models have noted that children with ASD often have lower levels of Bifidobacterium species compared to neurotypical controls. Some preliminary clinical trials and open-label studies have reported modest improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms and, in rare cases, behavioral symptoms following supplementation with Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics. However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, lack of blinding, and heterogeneity in probiotic formulations. To date, there are no large, well-powered, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials that conclusively demonstrate a direct benefit of Bifidobacterium supplementation for core autism symptoms. The current scientific evidence is considered preliminary and weak (rating: 1/5), supporting only the possibility of benefit for comorbid gastrointestinal issues frequently seen in ASD rather than for autism itself. Leading scientific and clinical guidelines do not currently recommend Bifidobacterium as a treatment for autism. Thus, while the rationale for exploring probiotics in ASD is scientifically grounded, robust evidence for Bifidobacterium’s efficacy in treating or supporting autism specifically is lacking.
