Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is an herb with a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is valued for its purported immune-boosting properties and its role as an “adaptogen.” In TCM, astragalus is often prescribed as part of complex herbal formulas intended to support general vitality, prevent illness, and sometimes to address conditions believed to involve "deficient" immune function. Its traditional use includes the management of chronic illnesses and, occasionally, for individuals with symptoms suggestive of autoimmune disorders, though the concept of autoimmunity as understood in modern medicine does not have a direct analogue in TCM.

Modern scientific research into astragalus and autoimmune disorders is limited and preliminary. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest astragalus extracts can modulate immune activity, potentially enhancing some immune functions while suppressing others. However, these effects are inconsistent and not well understood, and there is little high-quality clinical research directly evaluating astragalus in people with diagnosed autoimmune diseases. In some cases, stimulating the immune system could theoretically worsen autoimmune conditions. Therefore, while astragalus is traditionally used for immune support, there is insufficient scientific validation for its use specifically in treating autoimmune disorders, and its safety in this context is not well established. Patients with autoimmune diseases should consult healthcare professionals before using astragalus.
