Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

European Mistletoe (Viscum album) has a long history of use in traditional European medicine, particularly in anthroposophic medicine where it has been used primarily as an adjunct therapy for cancer. Its use for autoimmune disorders is much less documented in both traditional and scientific literature. Some traditional sources and practitioners have proposed mistletoe extracts for immune modulation, based on the belief that it can "balance" the immune system, but these uses are not well-established or widespread outside of specific complementary or alternative medicine circles.

Scientific studies investigating mistletoe's effects have primarily focused on its potential as an immunostimulant and its application in oncology, rather than in classical autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or lupus. There are very few clinical trials, and no robust, high-quality scientific evidence supporting the use of European Mistletoe for the direct treatment or management of autoimmune disorders. Most available data are either anecdotal, derived from in vitro studies, or extrapolated from its use in cancer patients, where immune modulation is a desired effect. As such, current support for its use in autoimmune conditions is weak and primarily based on tradition or theoretical mechanisms, not rigorous clinical validation.
