New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Oil has been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory properties, which has led to interest in its use for autoimmune disorders, particularly those involving joint inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis. The oil contains unique omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA), which are believed to modulate inflammatory pathways. Several small randomized controlled trials and laboratory studies suggest that Green Lipped Mussel extracts (both oil and powder) can reduce inflammation markers and may provide symptomatic benefit in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. However, results are mixed and many studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, or lack of blinding. A 2018 review in Clinical Rheumatology found some evidence for reduced joint pain and improved function in arthritis patients, but highlighted the need for larger, high-quality trials. There are also preliminary data from animal studies suggesting immunomodulatory effects that could theoretically benefit autoimmune processes, but robust clinical evidence in humans for autoimmune conditions beyond arthritis is lacking. Regulatory agencies and clinical guidelines do not currently endorse Green Lipped Mussel Oil as a standard treatment for autoimmune diseases. Overall, while there is some scientific basis for its anti-inflammatory effects, the strength of the evidence supporting its routine use in autoimmune disorders is weak at this time.
