Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Seleno methionine is an organic form of selenium, an essential trace element involved in various biological processes, including antioxidant defense and immune function. Its use in autoimmune disorders, particularly autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, is justified by scientific evidence, though the strength of the evidence is moderate and not conclusive. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated selenium supplementation (often as seleno methionine) in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. These studies have shown that selenium supplementation may reduce thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels and, in some cases, improve ultrasound features of the thyroid gland. The proposed mechanisms involve selenium’s role in reducing oxidative stress and modulating the immune response. However, while some studies report improvements in certain biomarkers and subjective well-being, the clinical significance—such as effects on thyroid function or long-term disease progression—remains under debate. Current clinical guidelines, such as those from the European Thyroid Association, suggest a potential benefit in specific cases but stop short of universally recommending selenium supplementation for all patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders. There is limited evidence regarding its benefit in other autoimmune conditions outside of thyroid disease. In summary, seleno methionine is used in the context of autoimmune thyroid disorders based on moderate scientific evidence, but more robust, long-term studies are needed to clarify its efficacy and safety across a broader range of autoimmune diseases.
