Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Stellaria dichotoma, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine (often known as "Yinchaihu"), has historically been used for a variety of conditions, primarily to "clear heat" and relieve symptoms such as fever or night sweats. While it is sometimes included in traditional formulations intended for general immune regulation or to support the body's defenses, there is limited direct traditional or modern use specifically for autoimmune disorders as defined in Western medicine. The rationale in traditional use is based on the principles of balancing "yin" and "yang" and not on the concept of autoimmunity. Scientific research on Stellaria dichotoma is sparse, especially with regard to autoimmune mechanisms or diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis. There are a few basic studies indicating mild anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects in vitro or in animal models, but these are preliminary and not directly linked to autoimmune disease models. There are no published clinical trials or robust scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for autoimmune disorders. Therefore, its use for this purpose is primarily based on traditional practice, with very limited indirect support from laboratory research. Clinical efficacy and safety for autoimmune disorders remain unproven.
