Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Teasel (Dipsacus spp.), particularly Dipsacus fullonum and Dipsacus sylvestris, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Europe and Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine, teasel root (known as Xu Duan) is used to "strengthen the liver and kidneys," improve circulation, and promote healing of bones and tendons. In Europe and North America, teasel has been popularized in some alternative circles for supporting the body during Lyme disease, a condition that may involve immune dysregulation, though this is not the same as treating autoimmune disorders directly.

There is minimal direct historical precedent for using teasel specifically to treat autoimmune disorders, as the concept of autoimmunity is modern. However, some practitioners of traditional medicine have applied teasel in a general sense for conditions involving chronic inflammation or “weakness”, which might today fall under the broader category of immune-related disorders. Scientific evidence supporting teasel’s efficacy for autoimmune diseases is lacking. Only limited laboratory studies exist, mostly focusing on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or antimicrobial effects in vitro or in animal models. No clinical trials in humans have demonstrated benefits for autoimmune disorders.

Thus, teasel’s use for autoimmune disorders is supported primarily by tradition, with very weak evidence (rating: 1) due to lack of modern scientific validation and only indirect historical use.
