Evidence supporting the use of: Black Mustard
For the health condition: Backache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Black mustard (Brassica nigra) has been traditionally used in various cultures as a topical remedy for musculoskeletal ailments such as backache. Historical records, particularly from traditional European and Ayurvedic medicine, describe the application of black mustard seeds in the form of poultices or plasters to ease muscle pain, stiffness, and inflammation. The seeds contain compounds like allyl isothiocyanate, which can create a warming sensation and increase blood flow when applied to the skin, possibly providing temporary relief from pain and discomfort.
However, there is very limited modern scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of black mustard for backache. Most available information is based on anecdotal or traditional use rather than rigorously controlled clinical trials. Some small studies on mustard plasters (not specific to black mustard) suggest a counterirritant effect, which might help distract from deeper pain, but these findings are not robust or widely replicated. Overall, while black mustard is indeed used traditionally for backache, its efficacy is not well-supported by scientific research.
