Trichosanthes, particularly species like Trichosanthes kirilowii and Trichosanthes cucumerina, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, Trichosanthes root (commonly known as Tian Hua Fen) is primarily used to clear heat, moisten dryness, and resolve phlegm, with applications in conditions like cough, diabetes, and certain types of inflammation. There are traditional records of its use in herbal formulas aimed at alleviating musculoskeletal pain, which can include backache, often as part of complex combinations with other herbs. However, there is little direct documentation of Trichosanthes being used as a sole or primary agent for backache in major traditional texts. Modern scientific research on Trichosanthes focuses mainly on its anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and immunomodulatory properties, with only limited studies examining its effects on pain or musculoskeletal disorders.
