Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ocimum basilicum, commonly known as American Basil or Sweet Basil, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani medicine. Its application for bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) is rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than scientific validation. Traditional healers have occasionally recommended basil seeds or extracts as a remedy for bedwetting, believing they help strengthen the bladder and reduce involuntary urination during sleep. However, there is scant documentation even in ethnobotanical sources specifically detailing basil's use for this purpose, and references are generally anecdotal or found in compilations of herbal folklore.

Current scientific literature does not provide clinical trials or pharmacological studies that directly test basil's efficacy for bedwetting. While basil exhibits mild diuretic and antispasmodic effects in laboratory studies, these findings have not been translated into validated treatment protocols for nocturnal enuresis. The evidence supporting basil’s use for bedwetting is therefore weak and based almost exclusively on traditional or anecdotal reports, without robust historical prevalence or clinical confirmation. As such, basil's role in treating bedwetting is best considered a minor, tradition-based application rather than a scientifically endorsed remedy.
