Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for its calming, antispasmodic, and mild sedative properties. In folk medicine, chamomile tea or extracts have occasionally been recommended as a remedy for childhood bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), largely based on its general use for promoting relaxation and sleep, as well as its purported effects on soothing the bladder and urinary tract. However, the historical record is sparse and non-specific regarding chamomile’s effectiveness for this particular condition.

There is currently very limited scientific evidence to support the use of chamomile for treating bedwetting. No robust clinical trials or systematic reviews have examined chamomile’s efficacy for nocturnal enuresis in children or adults. The rationale appears to stem from chamomile’s mild anxiolytic effects and its traditional use to calm the nervous system, which some have speculated might theoretically benefit children whose bedwetting is associated with anxiety or sleep disturbances. Nonetheless, these connections are indirect and lack specific validation.

In summary, the use of chamomile for bedwetting is justified primarily by tradition and anecdotal reports, rather than by scientific research. The overall quality and amount of evidence supporting this use are very low.
