Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Agastache, particularly Agastache rugosa (Korean Mint), is traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine to address digestive complaints, including belching. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Agastache is known as Huo Xiang and is featured in classic herbal formulas such as "Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San." This formula is widely prescribed for symptoms like nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, abdominal distension, and belching, typically attributed to "dampness" or disruption of digestive qi. The use of Agastache for belching is primarily based on its aromatic properties, which are believed to "harmonize the middle burner" and alleviate stagnation in the gastrointestinal tract.

Although there is some in vitro and animal research on Agastache's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions, direct scientific studies specifically examining its effect on belching in humans are lacking. The evidence base remains rooted in historical use and clinical tradition, with limited modern clinical trials validating its efficacy for this specific symptom. Therefore, while Agastache is a well-established remedy for belching in traditional medicine systems, robust scientific support is currently insufficient, resulting in a low evidence rating.
