Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly within Ayurvedic and various folk medicine systems, for digestive complaints including belching (excessive burping or eructation). Traditionally, bay leaf has been brewed as a tea or used as a spice to relieve digestive discomfort, thought to work by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes and reducing gas formation. However, the scientific literature providing direct evidence for its efficacy in treating belching specifically is sparse. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest bay leaf extracts may have mild carminative (gas-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically support its traditional use for gastrointestinal discomfort and gas-related symptoms. Nevertheless, there are no well-designed clinical studies or trials that directly assess bay leaf’s effectiveness for belching in humans. The evidence remains largely anecdotal and based on long-standing herbal traditions rather than modern scientific validation. As such, while its use for belching is justified by tradition, the strength of supporting evidence is weak, and further research would be needed to confirm any therapeutic benefit for this specific condition.
