Evidence supporting the use of: Cambodium Cardamom
For the health condition: Belching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), including the variety known as Cambodium Cardamom, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for addressing digestive complaints, including belching (eructation), bloating, and flatulence. Historical texts and ethnobotanical reports document the use of cardamom seeds and pods as a carminative — a substance that helps reduce gas formation in the gastrointestinal tract and supports its expulsion. Cardamom is often included in herbal remedies and digestive blends for its aromatic and soothing properties, believed to stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes and help settle the stomach after meals.
From a scientific perspective, there are limited clinical studies directly examining cardamom’s effect on belching specifically. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest cardamom extracts may relax gastrointestinal smooth muscle and reduce spasms, which theoretically could reduce symptoms like belching. However, high-quality human trials are lacking, and cardamom’s direct efficacy for belching is not established in the medical literature. Thus, while traditional use is robust and cardamom is considered generally safe in culinary amounts, the scientific evidence supporting its use for belching is modest and indirect.
