Evidence supporting the use of: Large-leaf gentian
For the health condition: Belching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Large-leaf Gentian (Gentiana macrophylla) is traditionally used in various Asian systems of medicine, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine, as a remedy for digestive complaints, including belching (also known as eructation). The root of the plant is considered to have "bitter" properties, which are believed to stimulate appetite and promote digestive secretions. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Gentiana macrophylla is often prescribed as part of multi-herb formulas to address symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and belching, under the theory that it helps to "clear heat-dampness" and improve the function of the stomach and liver. However, direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Large-leaf Gentian specifically for belching is limited. Most available studies focus on the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Gentiana macrophylla, rather than its digestive benefits. There is some general evidence that bitter herbs can increase saliva, gastric juice, and bile flow, which may support digestion and reduce symptoms such as belching, but these findings are not specific to Large-leaf Gentian. As such, the use of this herb for belching rests largely on traditional knowledge rather than robust clinical research.
