Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ligustilides are a class of phthalide compounds primarily found in plants such as Ligusticum chuanxiong (Szechuan lovage) and Angelica sinensis (dong quai), both commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The use of ligustilide-containing herbs for digestive complaints, including belching (also known as eructation), is rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. In TCM, these herbs are often prescribed to "promote Qi circulation" and "alleviate stagnation," which are believed to help with various gastrointestinal disturbances such as bloating, belching, and abdominal discomfort. However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence specifically linking ligustilides themselves to the reduction of belching in humans. Most available research on ligustilides focuses on their anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and vasodilatory effects, not on digestive symptoms. Thus, the support for using ligustilides to treat belching relies on historical usage and TCM theory, not on rigorous clinical trials or mechanistic studies. The evidence rating is low (1) due to the lack of direct scientific or clinical corroboration.
