Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pears have been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese and Korean folk remedies, for a variety of digestive complaints, including belching (also referred to as "eructation" or “burping”). In these traditions, pears are considered mildly cooling and moistening foods that can help soothe the digestive tract. Folk remedies sometimes recommend pear juice or fresh pears to relieve symptoms of indigestion, excess stomach heat, or acid reflux, which may include belching as a symptom. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence directly supporting the use of pears for belching specifically. Most modern scientific studies on pears address their general digestive benefits, such as fiber content aiding regularity or antioxidants providing anti-inflammatory effects, rather than any targeted action against belching. Thus, the rationale for their use in this context is primarily traditional and anecdotal. No rigorous clinical trials or mechanistic studies have established a direct effect of pears on the physiological causes of belching, such as reducing swallowed air (aerophagia) or modifying gastric gas production. Therefore, while pears may be included in traditional approaches to digestive wellness, their use for treating belching is best understood as an aspect of folk medicine rather than evidence-based practice.
