Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Peppermint leaf (Mentha × piperita) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems as a remedy for various gastrointestinal complaints, including belching (eructation), indigestion, and flatulence. Historical texts and folk medicine practices from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have recommended peppermint tea or infusions to alleviate digestive discomforts characterized by gas and bloating, which often manifest as belching. The main active component, menthol, is known for its antispasmodic properties on smooth muscle tissue in the gastrointestinal tract, which may help relieve sensations of fullness and promote the passage of gas. While there is robust scientific evidence supporting peppermint oil (not specifically the leaf) for irritable bowel syndrome and some functional GI symptoms, direct clinical studies on peppermint leaf for belching are lacking. However, some herbal monographs and pharmacopeias (such as the German Commission E) recognize peppermint leaf for relieving dyspepsia and flatulence, which can be associated with belching. Thus, the use of peppermint leaf for belching is primarily justified by traditional use and supported by indirect scientific rationale regarding its effects on GI motility and muscle relaxation, but not by direct clinical trials specific to belching.
