Rating (out of 5): 1
Pyrrosia, commonly known as Pyrrosia leaf (Pyrrosia lingua), is a fern widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Pyrrosia is primarily valued for its effects on the urinary system, such as promoting urination and clearing heat. There is some traditional use of Pyrrosia to harmonize the stomach and relieve symptoms like belching, which are seen as manifestations of disrupted "Qi" flow in the stomach. However, this use is not among its most prominent or frequently cited applications in classical herbal texts. The rationale for using Pyrrosia for belching is rooted in TCM theories rather than modern scientific understanding; it is thought to help by resolving "dampness" or "phlegm" that can contribute to digestive discomfort, including belching.
There is little to no scientific research directly investigating Pyrrosia’s efficacy for belching or related digestive symptoms. The available pharmacological studies focus on its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties rather than gastrointestinal effects. Thus, the evidence supporting Pyrrosia’s use for belching is primarily traditional and anecdotal, with minimal support from modern clinical or preclinical research.
