Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sweet Orange alcohol (often derived from the peel of Citrus sinensis) has a longstanding presence in traditional medicine, especially in Chinese and Western herbalism, for digestive complaints including belching and bloating. The volatile oils in sweet orange peel, such as limonene, are thought to have mild carminative (gas-relieving) and spasmolytic (muscle-relaxing) effects, which may help alleviate symptoms like belching by relaxing gastrointestinal smooth muscle and aiding digestion. Historical texts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) frequently include citrus peel in formulas for digestive stagnation, although the use specifically of "alcohol" extracts is less well-documented than the use of dried peels or tinctures.

However, there is minimal high-quality scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of sweet orange alcohol or its extracts for belching specifically. Most available studies focus on general digestive health or on other species such as bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), and evidence often derives from animal or in vitro studies. As such, the use of sweet orange alcohol for belching is best regarded as traditional, with weak to moderate historical support and scant clinical validation.
