Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vinegar—particularly apple cider vinegar—has been used in traditional and folk remedies for digestive issues, including belching (excessive burping). The rationale is based on the idea that belching can be caused by low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), and consuming vinegar, an acidic substance, might "correct" this imbalance and improve digestion. However, scientific studies supporting the efficacy of vinegar for treating belching are lacking. Most evidence remains anecdotal, and clinical trials directly investigating vinegar’s effect on belching are absent. The practice remains rooted in tradition and popular health trends rather than empirical data. While vinegar may temporarily increase stomach acidity, it can also irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms in people with acid reflux or sensitive gastrointestinal tracts. Mainstream medical advice typically does not recommend vinegar for belching, instead focusing on dietary adjustments and other proven interventions. In summary, the use of vinegar for belching is justified by tradition, with little to no scientific validation.
