Evidence supporting the use of: Centella asiatica
For the health condition: Bell's Palsy
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Centella asiatica (commonly known as gotu kola) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is believed to have neuroprotective and wound-healing properties. In the context of Bell's Palsy—a condition characterized by sudden, temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles—Centella asiatica is sometimes used in traditional medicine with the aim of promoting nerve repair and reducing inflammation. However, there is very limited direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for Bell's Palsy. Most references to its use for this condition are anecdotal or based on broader claims about nerve regeneration and anti-inflammatory effects, rather than targeted studies or clinical trials. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Centella asiatica may promote nerve regeneration and reduce inflammation, these findings have not been robustly translated into clinical practice for Bell’s Palsy. Thus, its use for Bell’s Palsy is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation or clinical guidelines.
