Evidence supporting the use of: Butea superba
For the health condition: Benign Prostate Hyperplasia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Butea superba is a plant native to Thailand and is traditionally used as an herbal remedy for male sexual health issues, primarily erectile dysfunction and libido enhancement. Its use for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is largely based on traditional medicine and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific evidence. There is very limited research specifically examining Butea superba for the treatment or management of BPH. Most of the scientific studies on this herb focus on its potential androgenic and vasodilatory effects, which are thought to improve erectile function in men, but do not directly address prostate size or urinary symptoms associated with BPH.
The rationale for its use in BPH may be extrapolated from its general use in male reproductive health, but there are no published clinical trials or strong preclinical data demonstrating its efficacy or safety for BPH. Furthermore, reviews and pharmacological studies do not list Butea superba among the common or evidence-supported herbal treatments for BPH, such as saw palmetto or pygeum. Therefore, its use for BPH is not supported by scientific validation and remains within the realm of traditional herbal practice with minimal to no evidence base.
