Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Crinum latifolium is a plant traditionally used in Southeast Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Vietnam and Thailand, for various health conditions, including support for prostate health. In recent years, there has been some scientific interest in its potential use for treating Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH). Several in vitro and animal studies have suggested that extracts of Crinum latifolium exhibit anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects, which may theoretically benefit men with BPH by reducing prostate enlargement and associated symptoms. Some small-scale human studies, mostly conducted in Vietnam, have reported improvements in urinary symptoms or prostate size when using standardized extracts of this plant. These effects are often attributed to the presence of alkaloids and other bioactive compounds in the plant.

However, the available human clinical evidence is limited in both scale and methodological rigor. Most published trials are small, lack robust controls, and are not widely replicated outside of Southeast Asia. There are no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials published in major international medical journals to definitively establish efficacy or safety for BPH. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting its use, the overall evidentiary support remains weak to moderate (rated 2/5) and more robust research is necessary before it can be widely recommended in evidence-based practice.
