Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cucurbita (pumpkin, especially pumpkin seed oil) is used for supporting or treating symptoms of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH), with some scientific evidence to support its use, though the evidence is limited and of moderate quality. Traditionally, pumpkin seeds have been used in various cultures as a remedy for urinary problems, but more recent clinical research has begun to investigate their potential in BPH.

Scientific studies suggest that phytosterols and other bioactive compounds in pumpkin seeds may help inhibit 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme involved in prostate enlargement. Several randomized controlled trials indicate that oral supplementation with pumpkin seed oil or extracts may reduce lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with BPH, such as nocturia and poor urine flow. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Urologia Internationalis (2014) found a statistically significant improvement in International Prostate Symptom Scores (IPSS) after 12 months of pumpkin seed oil supplementation compared to placebo.

However, most studies are small, often not rigorously designed, and sometimes combine pumpkin with other herbs, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about efficacy. Systematic reviews generally rate the quality of evidence as low to moderate, and major urological guidelines do not currently recommend Cucurbita as a first-line therapy for BPH. Adverse effects are mild and rare. In summary, there is some scientific support for Cucurbita in BPH, but evidence is not robust.
