Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Botanical blends have a long history of use in traditional medicine for the treatment of bites and stings. Many cultures have used plant-based poultices, tinctures, or topical applications composed of various herbs to soothe pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent infection following insect or animal bites and stings. Common ingredients in these blends can include calendula, plantain, echinacea, lavender, and tea tree oil, among others. The rationale for their use is often based on the perceived anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or analgesic properties of certain plants. However, the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of botanical blends for bites and stings is limited and generally of low quality. Most studies focus on individual plant extracts rather than complex blends, and results are often preliminary or anecdotal. For example, tea tree oil and calendula have shown some antimicrobial and soothing properties in vitro and in small clinical studies, but robust clinical trials are lacking. As a result, while the use of botanical blends for bites and stings is well-rooted in tradition, there is only modest scientific support for their efficacy, and more rigorous research is needed to substantiate their benefits and determine optimal formulations and safety profiles.
