Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

European-Five Finger Grass (Potentilla reptans), also known as cinquefoil, has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine. It has been applied topically or used as a poultice to treat bites and stings, as well as other skin irritations, owing to its reputed astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical herbals from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods often mention cinquefoil as a remedy for wounds, insect bites, and even snake bites. The astringent effect is attributed to its tannin content, which may help reduce swelling and irritation at the site of a bite or sting.

However, there is little to no scientific research specifically validating the effectiveness of European-Five Finger Grass for treating bites and stings. Modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies focused on this particular use are lacking. Most references to its use for bites and stings are found in ethnobotanical or historical texts rather than peer-reviewed scientific literature. Therefore, while the use is well-rooted in tradition, the evidence does not rise above anecdotal and historical levels.
